Let's consider the stark differences between a functioning American democracy and an oppressive autocratic regime, Autocracy, a term derived from the Greek words "auto," meaning "self," and "Kratos," meaning "power," refers to a system in which an individual holds power to rule. What makes autocracy particularly concerning is the lack of accountability. In a healthy governance system, the ruler, or a small group of individuals, should be answerable to the people, ensuring that decisions are made in the best interest of the society. It's important to note that democracy and autocracy are at opposite ends of the spectrum. In a democracy, power is vested in the hands of the people, either directly or through elected representatives. In stark contrast, in an autocracy, a single individual or a group wields unchecked power with no accountability to the people. This lack of oversight opens the door to potential abuse of power, a sobering reminder of the dangers of autocracy. Repression is rampant in autocracies. However, it's inspiring to see how citizens often find ways to resist and push for change despite the significant challenges they face in their daily lives. They strike with the same force, causing the same devastation and igniting the same anguish in the hearts of the victim's loved ones. Yet, our leaders and arms dealers offer empty words and prayers. The time for action is now before you or someone you hold dear becomes the next statistic. Please don't wait until it's too late. The majority of mass shootings in America are blamed on mental health issues. However, the only answer they provide is prayers and thoughts, as if American mental health patients have an advantage over the rest of the world's sufferers, as if they have the authority to perpetrate mass atrocities and murders. And we, the American people, have an ideal solution: prayers and thoughts. These incidents are covered in the press for a day or two, but the truth is stark: the next tragedy will occur, not if, but when.
